Mayur Vihar is a residential area in East Delhi, situated just across the Yamuna River from the rest of Delhi. As the name suggests, it is the dwelling (''vihar'') of the peacock (''mayur''). Mayur Vihar is a relatively recent development of Delhi that was developed in three phases. It is well connected by high-frequency buses and has its own station, 'Mayur Vihar metro station' on the blue line of the Delhi Metro. ==Phases in Mayur Vihar== * Phase 1 : It is situated between Pandavnagar, Old Patparganj, Trilokpuri, Chilla Village, Chilla DDA Janata Flats and River Yamuna. Phase I has DDA flats (organized into Pockets I-V) and Housing Co-Operative Society Buildings (e.g., Hindustan Apartments, CGHS Apartments). The first immigrants to Phase I were mainly in Pocket III and Pocket I in the early 1980s. Later, Pocket II, Pocket IV (near metro station) and Pocket V were developed. The nearest village is known as Chilla Gaon that is now surrounded by housing societies. Sadar Apartments is one of the oldest apartments in the locality. Mayur Vihar Phase 1 also has the oldest and biggest church which is St. John's Orthodox Church in Pocket 3. Another Hindu temple is Shri Subha Siddhi Vinayaka Mandir Society Other places of worship includes a Sikh Gurdwara and Shirdi Sai Temple. The Sikh Gurdwara on the east side of Pocket III near police station was burnt during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Gurdwara has been repaired and restored now. Opposite of Gurudwara Bengali community Kali Temple is situated name as Kali Bari Mayur Vihar Samity. The Bengali Community perform Durga Puja which is well known in Delhi. Pocket 3 Market has a highly reputed and oldest (Since 1982) Departmental and Grocery store Prem Chand Sunil Garg Provision store (Tel: 011-22710970), Shop No.11 and 12, at Pocket 3 Market, Shopping Complex, Mayur Vihar, Phase-1, Delhi-110091. Moreover, open all days (Monday to Sunday) from 10 am to 9:30 pm. Best price shop for quality Pulses, Rice, Sugar, Edible Oil, Soaps and Detergents, Biscuits, Namkeen etc. Pocket 3 Market also have a Post Office, Rajeev Sweets one of the best Sweet Shops of Delhi, Famous Chakki Ka Atta ( Laxmi Flour Mill ), Highly famed Dr. Srinivasan (General Physician Doctor), Syscom Computers the most Trusted Computer/Laptop Shop in the Area, Upkar Chemist the Pharmacy / Chemist Shop that has all medicines, which are authentic and stored as per required standards. It stores enough drugs so that necessary drugs are available at all the times. The most popular market area is the 'Acharya Niketan' market which houses brands of various commodities. One day of the week (typically a day when shops are closed), an evening market is organized where local residents can buy vegetables and other day-to-day things. More contemporary shopping mall (Star City) has various clothing stores (Reliance Retail) and restaurants as the major attraction. Mayur Vihar Phase I is a green area with many parks and gardens. Local residents can be seen doing exercises in the morning, playing cards (by senior citizens) and cricket by youngsters during the day. One can find a large number of retired people living in this place. Prior to 1985 the people came here and bought houses at a very low cost; now the prices have gone up due to the coming of Metro and other amenities in the area. Pocket V of the mayur Vihar was latest colony allotted and developed by the DDA.
